Digital transformation delivered a big blow to impulse purchasing. The rapid rise of online grocery shopping means less frequent trips to the store, and for fewer items. The rising popularity of self checkout, smart carts, and smartphone scan-and-pay technology means less time waiting in line and therefore less temptation to buy fizzy drinks, sugary snacks, and tabloid news magazines. This does not mean the end of the lucrative impulse section, but it might require rethinking impulse—both on and offline.
